Saltee Islands
June 24th Day 10
Puffins at Great Saltee! Good crossing, woke up to fog which was not the same as the beautiful clear day yesterday but it cleared up when I got there. Crossing took about an hour and a half there and 45 back because I had wind and tide with me well. Couldn’t see the islands for a while and then made out little Saltee and then great Saltee with the guidance of watching where the little ferry boats were going. Nice walk up the cliffs and just amazing to watch the mannerisms and social aspects of the puffins. Hundreds everywhere and hundreds more of Razorbills, Gannets, Cormorants, and Guillemots. Just fantastic and got lots of good photos and videos. They are so dang cute. Had a nice rest on the beach before getting back into the boat, was tired after the hike and being in the wind so needed a rest. Lots of people came up to me before and after the walk to ask about what I was doing and it always lends its self to some interesting questions that seem straight forward to me but to people who have never kayaked, it’s just totally foreign to them.
Paddled back and used the west ebb to push me towards Cullenstown and am camping on a beach with miles each way of no one around. It looks like there’s a lake behind the dunes so I’d say it’s tricky to get here from land. I guess it is from the sea too unless you’re on a trip like this.
