Old Head Tunnel
July 8th, Day 24
Early morning to catch the low wind, sorted my things while Jon made us breakfast and then drove me and my stuff to the beach. Such a nice stay, his family is wonderful. Got on the water and started to cross the bay and got a funny feeling that it’s just been high tide which means the tunnel will have good depth.. so I changed my mind and thought I better just go look and see if I can go through. Got there with hundreds of birds swooping around and making lots of noise and there it was, a perfect 25 meter more or less, straight shot to the other side. I went in and it gets dark fast and you’re just hoping you don’t hit your paddle on a rock underneath as you pass over it. Such an eerie feeling, I love being in the caves on the coast here. To the end, turned around and came right back as to continue on my route. Very happy I got to see that. Started to cross to Seven Heads but about half way through the wind and swell picked up faster than expected and I got another funny feeling that I have to commit to this headland if I go around and I just don’t think today is right for me to be out there. I’ve definitely been playing things on the more conservative side on this trip and my risk management is in a full on mode, but I’m sure it’s to everyone’s ease to hear that, than the other way. So got to Blind Strand and it was pissing rain and I realized I maybe didn’t have the amount of food that I wanted given that I’ll be out camping for the next 3-4 days. Kept my boat with some lovely people up the road from the beach so I didnt have to take everything out and put it on the car. Marianne came to pick me up and we went food shopping and then to their house for a rest. I met Niall at the Helvic swim and he’s been very helpful since then. Nice dinner and to be early, they are all so kind.
